FAQs:
THAI
Where is the treatment performed?
Thai massage is performed on a futon mat on the floor.
As no oils are used fresh linen cushion and mat covers are used instead of paper couch roll.
What happens at a treatment session?
A detailed questionnaire will be completed before any treatment is given. This allows the therapist to choose the most appropriate positions and stretches to help you reach your desired outcome. You will lie or sit, fully clothed, on a futon mat on the floor with cushions providing extra support if required. The therapist uses palms, thumbs, feet and elbows to work the energy lines followed by sensitively applied stretches. The treatment is finished with either a relaxing face massage or in a more energising sitting position.
Will it hurt?
There are many tales from travellers who have experienced painful massages either in Thailand or from friends who have learned the art from short courses while on holiday. This need not be the case with a sensitive and well taught practitioner. Firm pressure is applied only to the level that the client is comfortable with and stretches are applied with great care. Your therapist will ‘listen’ to your body and only take you as far as is safe and necessary.
What do I wear?
It is necessary to wear light, loose clothing which ideally should be of natural fibre such as cotton. It should not be shiny or slippy like lycra. Jogging pants and a long sleeved t-shirt are most suitable.
How long does it take?
A Thai treatment should last anywhere between one and two and half hours. At least one and half hours are recommended to gain full benefit
How many should I have?
The number of treatments is up to the individual although as with most complementary therapies the effects are accumulative and last longer if several treatments are taken at regular intervals.
Who is it suitable for?
This is a lovely therapy that can be adapted for nearly everyone. There are many ways of achieving the same stretches and usually several positions for working the energy lines. Disability, lack of flexibility as well as the older or younger client can all be accommodated.
There are some medical conditions that may require medical approval before a treatment.
What are the benefits?
There are many benefits of Thai yoga massage.
How will it make me feel?
A Thai massage is an energy-based therapy and so after the treatment you will feel very relaxed. Some people report feeling heavy and tired, but this passes within 24 hours and most people report a sense of renewed energy. Quite often there is an immediate relief of general aches and pains and a good nights sleep follows.
